Teaching Assistants

The school currently employs Vietnamese Teaching Assistants to work with the main teacher in the classroom educating the students through the British Curriculum.

The students can be aged between 2 and 10 years old although the majority of the Assistants are employed with the younger students who are aged 5 and under. A full job description is attached below.

If you are interested in applying for a job as an Assistant Teacher you need to have the following qualifications:

  • A University degree
  • The ability to speak English to a reasonable level as the interview for the job will be conducted in English. Also if you are successful at interview you will be speaking in English throughout the day.
  • The ability and enthusiasm to inspire and educate young children.
  • Previous experience is not essential but would be an advantage.
  • Salary is based on experience and English speaking level.
  • Upon satisfactory completion of a 3 month probationary period the employee is registered for the government health insurance plan.

Job Description – Assistant Teacher

General Responsibilities

  • Assist the class teacher in managing classroom behaviour.
  • Assist the class teacher in preparing materials for use in classroom.
  • Maintain a tidy and organised classroom.
  • Ensure that resources are easily available to children.
  • Teach small groups of children in activities.
  • Display children’s work.
  • Encourage children to take responsibility for maintaining a tidy classroom – not to act as classroom servant to children!
  • Be aware of the class teacher’s long term and weekly planning – read it and offer suggestions.
  • Assist in the supervision of children whilst in Music, swimming and PE lessons.
  • In rare circumstances when teachers are absent and supply cover is unavailable, to supervise the class with work provided either by the class teacher, another class teacher or the relevant Head.
  • Convey messages between classroom teacher and parents.
  • Answer parents‘ basic enquiries and direct parents to the child’s teacher when asked about academic levels etc.
  • Offer to act as a translator for Vietnamese parents who feel unable to discuss their children in English with the class teacher.
  • To dress in a manner suitable for teaching i.e. no high heels, tight skirts, shorts etc.
  • Wear sports shoes during PE and swimming lessons.
  • Carry out additional tasks and duties as reasonably requested by the relevant Head.
  • Speak English in and around the school unless asked to translate
  • Use every opportunity to improve your own English
  • Adhere to the school policies
Working Hours: 7:45 – 4:00pm Monday to Friday
In addition all Assistant Teachers are required, on a rota basis, to stay in school until the last child is collected.

Occasionally Assistant Teachers are required, on a rota basis, to do playground supervision.

Occasionally Assistant Teachers are required to attend special functions in the evening or at weekends when reasonable notice is given.
