Design Technology
Design
and technology is about making things that people want and that work
well. Creating these things is hugely exciting: it is an inventive,
fun activity. James Dyson, Chairman, Dyson Ltd
KEY STAGE 1
Pupils learn how to think imaginatively
and talk about what they like and dislike when designing things. They
build on their own experiences of investigating objects around them.
They explore how familiar things work, and talk about, draw and make
their ideas. They learn how to design and safely make things using a
variety of tools and materials.
The children design and make the following:
Y1 - a piece of playground equipment, an
instrument, a kaleidescope, and also examine design technology in the
home, with moving pictures and in food.
Y2 - make puppets and wind up vehicles,
as well as examining design in nature and sculpture.

STAGE 2
Pupils work on a range of different design
activities, both individually and in collaborative groups. They think
about what products are used for and the needs of the people who use
them. They plan what has to be done and identify what works well and
what could be improved. They draw on knowledge and understanding from
other areas of the curriculum.
KEY STAGE 3
Pupils use a wide range of materials to
design and make products. They work out their ideas with some precision,
taking into account how products will be used, who will use them, how
much they cost and their appearance. They develop their understanding
of designing and making by investigating products and finding out about
the work of professional designers and manufacturing industry. They
use computers, including computer aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM)
and control software, as an integral part of designing and making. They
draw on knowledge and understanding from other areas of the curriculum.
